Q. Tell us about One Part Plant (cliff notes version, lol). How did you get into the blogging world?

A. I had been designing invitations for the last ten years, but losing my passion for it. After changing my diet, a few years ago to avoid a major surgery (hysterectomy) – I wanted to start helping other people feel great too. So, I decided to get a certification in plant-based nutrition and start OPP. It was giant leap in terms of my career – but it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am still designing for businesses and some lifestyle brands, which I think I will always do, but helping people through food is truly my passion now.

One Part Plant, my new website/food initiative is dedicated to clean food and a happy head. The website features recipes, how-tos, and advice on living healthier – but I have also partnered with some of the best restaurants in to start offering plant-based options on their menus {I even have a steakhouse on board David Burke’s Primehouse!}. I think when you start to change your diet to a plant-based one, it can be intimidating and hard to go out to eat with friends. You don’t want to be the girl at the table that is asking for a million substitutions, but you also don’t want to force your friends to eat at veg-friendly restaurants if that’s not their thing. One Part Plant and our partners are solving this  problem by offering awesome plant-based options…making it easy for all types of food-lovers to enjoy great meals together.

Q. How does food affect your overall well being?

A. Everything that goes into your mouth affects your well being. Your gut is your second brain. I don’t think we realize how much a healthy gut can affect our energy, mood, and well being. When you are feeding your body crap, your brain is going to feel the same way. You don’t have to stress out on eating perfect everyday, but just being mindful of how certain foods make you feel can be a game changer.

Q. What foods can a bride load up on to #bethebestU?

A. Whole plant-based foods. A plant-based diet can change your skin and overall appearance in a matter of weeks. People you know will start asking you what you are doing to look so good. Your hair will be shinier and you will have a new glow. I’ve never met a bride that doesn’t want to glow!

Think of every meal revolving around vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains and ones that aren’t processed. Make these the centerpiece of your dish and not the side. Most of us didn’t grow up eating this way, so it may seem strange at first {I know I was skeptical}. But give it a shot a few times a week and you’ll feel so good that you’ll want to eat this way all the time. Any change can be difficult at first, especially a big one like your diet – so start slow by planticizing your favorite dishes. If you love tacos, try sweet potato and black bean ones. If you love spaghetti, try a brown rice pasta and throw in tons of spinach in your sauce. You don’t have to just eat sprouts and drink wheatgrass shots – make the foods you love, but in a cleaner and more mindful way.

 Q. Are there stress reducing foods?

A. I think it comes down to rethinking your “comfort foods”. By eating traditional comfort foods {pizza and french fries were my go-tos}, this can create more stress on your body because of the energy it takes to digest them. If a big bowl of mashed potatoes is going to be the only thing that calms your nerves about your floral budget, make them with unsweetened almond milk instead of butter and milk. Or if a pint of ice cream is the only thing that will stop you from calling your mother-in-law-to-be a not-so-nice name grab one that is made of coconut or rice milk instead. I also sometimes start with a big bowl of berries or chia pudding to see if that does the trick. If I am still feeling like I HAVE to have something, than I’ll go for it. Don’t beat yourself over wanting comfort foods, just change them up a little.

Q. Do you have a recipe our brides-to-be can incoporate into their hectic schedules?

A. I am big on quickie juices or smoothies. One of my favorites is 1 cup almond milk, a frozen banana (peel before you freeze), a huge handful of kale or spinach – blend that together for a nice jolt of greens. Buy ball jars to store them – so you can throw them in your purse for the way to work or a wedding meeting. I also love this quick salad dressing over greens, cucumber, avocado, tomatoes and olives. Dressing: 2 Tablespoons Tahini (you can find in peanut butter section of grocery store), juice of half a lemon, dash of salt and pepper, dash of hot sauce. Whisk together (add a little water for thinner dressing) and toss with your salad mixture.

Q. What other advice do you have to offer our brides-to-be?

A. Start and end your day with plant-based foods. It sets the tone for your day. The worst is eating a huge meaty and dairy-filled dinner and then waking up feeling tired and unenergized the next day. Make your dinners full of easily digestible foods – big leafy greens and veggie filled wraps, Mediterranean feasts of babganoush and lentils and rice, simple homemade Thai dishes like red curry and broccoli.

And #1 – remember to be good to yourself and don’t sweat the small stuff. All of the planning, budgeting, and family drama has nothing to do what your wedding is all about. It’s about you and your man being in love and living happily ever after. When your maid of honor calls to tell you she’s pregnant and won’t be able to fit into her dress…close your eyes, breathe, and picture your beau’s face on the day you fell in love. It will bring you right back to where you need to be.

Founders/Treasure Hunters/Designers, Heather Wells and Gillian Chadwick sat down with Be U to share insight on their unique process and beautiful world.

Q: How was Heart of Gold born?

Gillian: Heart of Gold was born by a variety of stars lining up at the right place and time and all pointing in one direction! It started with Heather Wells, the owner, creator, and prime force of the brand. She had been running a company called Bright Lights Little City (beautiful handmade lighting) for twelve years after graduating RISD. She was on “The Martha Stewart Show” for it, and appeared in Newsweek, Fab and Uncommon Goods, but she always had her eye open for new directions in which to create. Heather is a champion treasure hunter—I’ve never seen anything like it! She finds gorgeous antique materials from all over the world, and in particular had come into an astonishing collection of gold and silver plated flowers from mid-century. They are from a private collection that is truly mind-blowing, and in combination with scores of other magical materials she had collected, I think that high-end bridal headpieces started to emerge as a clear direction.

I met Heather when I first came to visit New England from my hometown of Philly. Her husband and my boyfriend have been best friends since high school, and I literally walked into their door and right into an excited conversation with her that has continued to this day. I have a background in bridal headpieces (ran a company called Elemental Dream Day in the early aughts) and jewelry production, but my main love is rock and roll, so I wear headpieces fairly regularly…on stage with my band!

Heather: Absolutely! Heart of Gold was born out of a few driving forces! The first is the dynamic mentorship with my friend who has given me an exceptional collection of gold and silver plated flowers from the mid-century, along with the artistic wisdom that comes from creating for the past 93 years! The second star force is the artistic collaboration and very special friendship that Gillian and I have. The last force is the feeling of the universe telling me this is the right time for Heart of Gold to be born!

Q: On your hunt for treasures, what do you look for? Once you find the treasure, how do you use your talents and craftsmanship to incorporate the heirloom treasure into a one-of-a-kind piece?

 Gillian: Well, Heather is the treasure hunter, but I can tell you that from our conversations I know she is zeroed in on texture, tactile luxury and craftsmanship. We’re both obsessed with the materials being made with the utmost care before we make them into designs. That’s one main reason so many vintage materials are used. As anyone who wears vintage knows, the craftsmanship was on another level in the past century. Heather also loves materials with a good provenance—the story of the how the items were created, or came to be in our pieces, is important. Since they’re becoming a piece that will be someone’s heirloom, and a part of their personal story, it’s all the better when they traveled from distant lands and were made by hands that cared what they were doing.

Once the materials are collected we both use our multiple decades of experience in craft and jewelry to make them strong, beautiful, quality items. For designing we’ve extensively researched crowns and hair accessories throughout history and art, as well as drawing on the edgier styles of bohemian and rock and roll that we both love. What I think emerges is something both hyper-romantic and cool.

Q: How do you incorporate magic into each piece?

Gillian: We listen to great music and care deeply about the experience someone is going to have wearing one of the Heart of Gold pieces. There is also a priority treatment given to the art of the piece. No expense of time or quality is spared to make each design as gorgeous as we can possibly make it. We know that’s what brides want out of their experience.

Heather: The magic we incorporate into each piece is infused by doing what we love, and making the very best piece we can with our hands.

Q: If Chicago brides were interested in a one-of-a-kind piece, where could they find it?

Gillian: Heart of Gold just debuted last week at the International Bridal Week show, and we were both thrilled and honored by the response. We’re working with a number of stores right now and stockists will be listed soon on the website, as well as a retail arm of the business for brides to buy direct.

Having lost my own father, I can tell you there is no one else better I can think of to lead me into married life! The moments you don’t see often times are the most touching. “I can’t really share any specific moments between a bride and her mom because although we are in the vicinity and “around” we always try to give our clients the private moments that they deserve with their loved ones. All I can say it that it is always a joy to watch a mother see her daughter for the first time in her gown…” Michelle Durpetti of Michelle Durpetti Events tells us. She does go on to mention one moment that stands out from a 2011 bride-to-be’s mom. “Her mom read this really sweet Irish blessing at the reception…I just always loved this moment that Carasco captured {photograph above}. I think that there are always moments between mothers and their daughters on their wedding day – and it is one of the more favorite parts of my job when we work with these couples to plan this really important day and then get to be around during these really sweet moments.”

Q. Hi Amanda! So just where did this love story start?

A. “Ben and I went to the same college, Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. Ironically I had always told other’s what a great guy Ben was, but had never put two and two together for myself, until my senior year, night of homecoming. We spent all night talking until early hours of the next morning; there was something that just clicked. After I graduated, I went to grad school in Austin,TX and Ben followed.”

Q. When and where did Ben get down on bended knee?

A. “I am Persian and in the Persian culture, they believe in long courtships, so it works out beautifully that we have been dating for nine years. There was so much behind the scenes action leading up to our engagement and I was none the wiser.

My parents live in Alabama, Ben and I here in Chicago. Ben knew he HAD to ask my father’s permission to marry me. So over Father’s Day weekend flew down to Alabama to do so. What he didn’t count on was my father keeping him there to ask my mother as well. Only my mother wasn’t in town, she returned 8 hours later. My parents have an estate ring that I have always wanted, for my engagement, but they {and Ben} decided I should have a ring of my own. Working with my mother Ben had the ring recreated.

We were in the midst of wedding season, having just been in Napa for a friends wedding and heading to New York for another. Ben was engrossed in these papers on the plane. I didn’t think anything of it, just figured it was fantasy draft stuff. Our NY friends had an eclectic, grand wedding at Housing Works – Bookstore Café. It was fantastic! The next morning we had coffee and breakfast with some other guests. Ben then asked if I wanted to walk around and grab a coffee. {“WHAT?! Didn’t we just drink five pots” is what I was thinking, instead I said sure.} We went back to the bookstore were the reception had been the night before, grabbed coffee and went to sit at one of the booths. I was busy with my phone, when Ben told me to “Put the phone away”, I looked up confused as Ben was handing me a stack of papers {the papers from the plane}. The handfuls of papers were text messages between Ben and my siblings asking for their blessing in his marrying me and how they thought he should propose. I was blown away; it was then that Ben asked for my hand.

The store was closing to set up for another event, but I knew we had to find a momento to mark the occasion. We began scrambling to find the right the book, and then from behind the counter beckoned a 1^st edition “Gone with the Wind” {my favorite book}. It was #meant2be. Before calling our family and friends, we spent the next hour wandering Soho and enjoying the time together.”

Q. Where will the wedding be?

A. “Being from Alabama, its back home we go. I was worried I wouldn’t find vendors that understood the aesthetic we are going for. It is all falling into place and will be a great weekend of events {bridal lunch, rehearsal dinner, girl stuff, ohh just a wedding, and bridal brunch on Sunday}. We’re going with “The South will Raise Again: a twee and exotic mash-up” theme. It’s been fun planning. My friends think I should have my own reality show, introducing my parents to an ‘American’ wedding.”

Q. As a fashion blogger the big question is “Who are you wearing”?

A. “I have been looking forward to saying the ‘Bride wore Monique Lhuillier and Jimmy Choo”. I went home for Thanksgiving and on Black Friday we went shopping in Atlanta, which is when I met and fell in love with my gown. My Choo’s I found here in Chicago, at Luxury Garage Sale. And in another #meant2be moment our first dance song came on when I spied the beauties, they just had to be!”

 Q. Your engagement photos were taken in Alabama as well, any behind the scenes stories?

A. “We were lucky to find great photographers, Glass Jar Photography. Being all about fashion I packed fantastic heels and cute shoes for the day of the shoot. The ground was so wet from rain and melting snow though. My sister and I went on a mad hunt for rain boots. What I ended up buying were milking boots, with a reinforced toe, they were so heavy I kept sinking into the ground.”

The Kentucky Derby has long been watched not only for the sportsmanship of racing but with an eye on high society fashions. Raise for the Roses, will do more then have an eye on Chicago’s fashionista’s, it will benefit Care2Prevent, a program working to eliminate new infections of HIV/STI. {Care2Prevent provides comprehensive care and prevention education for young people living with HIV/STI and individuals who are most at-risk for new infections}. Prizes will be awarded to for the “Best Dressed Lady, Gentleman & Hat”. Our DIY guru Debi Lilly will be outfitting DIAG Bar & Grill in Derby fashion, surely bringing in dozens of decadent roses.

SARCA, owner and Be U’s adored fashion expert Alexis Cozzini will be on hand to judge the race-day fashions. She tells us “I’ll be looking for women who I think best represent what the Derby is all about. Dressing for the Derby is a time honored tradition. The hat is essentially the piece de resistance. Women in the south take their hats very seriously, so it will be fun to see how women in Chicago represent their personal style via their hat. In order to be in true Derby style, ideally women should be in something conservative, classy, brightly colored, and of course accessorized with a knock out hat!”

The second most important question after “Who will you wear” is “Who will you be cheering on”, so just who are our fashion mavens following? Cozzini did not miss a beat proudly stating “SARCA will be gunning for Team Rosie {Rose Napravnik}. It’s shocking that a woman has never even come close to winning the Derby, so this is one for the history books for sure! Rosie is young, incredibly talented, and primed to win. She will be riding Mylute”.

Ingredients:

2 oz Bourbon

1 oz Sparkling ICE Lemonade

4 Mint Leaves

2 Sugar Cubes

Crushed Ice

Directions:

1. Place the mint leaves at the bottom of a glass and crush (for real authenticity use a julep cup)

2. Pour in the Bourbon and Sparkling ICE Lemonade

3. Add in the crushed ice and stir

4. Garnish with mint sprig

“Of course, food is a key ingredient for any successful event – from the Derby to a wedding – and traditional dishes like the “hot brown” or “Burgoo” were created at several landmark hotels right in the heart of Kentucky – how fabulous would it be to apply this to your own wedding if it is being held at a historic location? For example, the Palmer House  here in Chicago is known for their fabulous brownies, and in addition to providing your guests with a delicious treat, you also give them the opportunity to learn about the historic landmark that is the Palmer House {there is a tag on the brownie that tells the history of the hotel}.”

“Kentucky Derby fashion has an energy, look and feel unlike any other event. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot apply the ideas from and behind the fashion to your own wedding shower or wedding day! But it is Revolutionary, who event specialist Sterling Berry will have her eye on. “He drew post position three, which is close to the rail, and perfect for his jockey Calvin Borel {a personal fav!}. He also has phenomenal breeding. I can’t wait to watch” she says.

Q. What would the headline of your story be?

A. “I think our headline might be ‘Right person, wrong time’. David and I knew each other 7 years before we finally went on a true first date. Both of our lives were busy. I was traveling a lot. I just wasn’t looking for love, with my career there wasn’t time for love.  Thank god, for David being relentless, he continued to ask me out. I started to question ‘Why haven’t I given him a chance?’ I wanted someone special. I decided it couldn’t hurt to go on a date. The rest is history; we were married a year later!”

Q.  Wow, 7 years, what a grand courtship! Do you have any fun stories from your dating files?

A. “David and I truly enjoy each other’s company. When we started dating, all of our dates seemed like a ‘big ask’, like family dinners. We both come from large families, our ‘dates’ seemed to always include a big family function. We spent a lot of time together, courting the old fashion way. I knew if we could enjoy during the boring moments together we would never have a down moment.”

Q. When and where did you two tie the knot?

A. “I was horrified to plan a wedding, watching friends marry, the planning seemed to consume them. So we eloped to Paris! {The couple celebrated their 2^nd wedding anniversary in April}. We married in a 16^th century French church. My best friend from Lane Tech College Prep High School, lives in Paris. I was happy to have her with me. When we returned we had a HUGE reception, here in the states, with 450 of our nearest and dearest. It was ‘My Big Fat Greek/Italian Wedding’.”

Q. Is there anything you would change?

A. “Going back, I would not elope. I hadn’t considered our families. We overlooked the enjoyment they would have from participating in the ceremony. We didn’t realize how stressed friends would be that we eloped.

We involve the families in everything now, especially with my daughter Gabriella {who just turned one!}”

Q. How do you spend your downtime together?

A. “We enjoy spending all our time with Gabriella. We watch a lot of movies and cook at home. I walk everyday with Gabriella, about 2 miles, David tries to come along. There is something very ZEN about walking through the city.”

Q. Can you share one of your favorite recipes to make at home?

A.  We enjoy cooking together, often making the following recipes:

TEX MEX “MIGAS”

Spicy egg breakfast

Dice green pepper, onion and jalapeno. Sauté in low heat in olive oil with garlic, pepper & salt.

Add diced tomatoes. Add eggs and scramble. If want extra spice, add some spicy salsa.

When almost done, sprinkle cheese and crumble crispy tortilla chips into the mixture, stir together quickly and serve!

CUCUMBER JALAPENO Margaritas

Silver Tequila

Agave nectar (to sweeten naturally)

1 cucumber

1Jalapeno

6 limes

1orange

LaCroix or soda water

Cut up jalapeno and cucumber (part of it) and drop in tequila amount you’re using.

Let it sit, at least 20 minutes, the longer the spicier and more flavorful.

Squeeze the limes and orange.

Add together with tequila mixture, agave nectar and touch of LaCroix, shake! Enjoy!

A. We often go to La Scarola, Coco Pazzo {where they went to celebrate their wedding} and Barco Mariscos – which is our go-to date night Mexican restaurant.

Over the last 15 years, I have been truly blessed to have the top bridal makeup agencies in Chicago. When Be U Weddings asked me to write a feature on the Top 10 Things to Consider When Working with a Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist for Your Wedding Day, I couldn’t have been more excited! I hope my extensive experience as a wedding makeup artist will help you lovely brides have a better understanding of the beauty industry and relieve some of your stress of finding a great makeup artist and hair stylist for your big day!

So what things should you consider when hiring and working with a makeup artist and hair stylist? There is a lot more to it than you think. Here are my top 10 things to consider…

1. Book Your Wedding Makeup and Hair in Advance

Great makeup artists and hair stylists book up to 12-15 months in advance. Don’t listen to wedding sites and bridal magazines that tell you to book 3 months out because that is simply not enough time!

For on location services, my recommendation is to book 6-12 months out at the very minimum and closer to 12-15 months out in larger cities, like Chicago. Don’t wait until the last minute or you’ll miss out on your top choices of top talented artists and stylists! Makeup and hair should be scheduled soon after you book your photographer. However, if decide to go with a salon, you can wait closer to the date. Make sure to call the salon and ask them how you should proceed since scheduling will vary by the salon you choose.

2. Read Online Reviews

Research and read online reviews about your artist and stylist. A couple of great sites to check out are Yelp and Wedding Wire. When it comes to makeup and hair, beauty is subjective to each and every person. I’ve seen the most beautiful makeup and hairstyles on brides who have said they hated the way their makeup and hair turned out on their wedding day.

The professionalism of the artist and stylist who is creating the look is just as important as what a woman sees when she looks in the mirror. When reading online reviews, take into consideration how the team handled their overall wedding day. Were they on time? Did they keep the wedding moving smoothly? Were they pleasant to be with? The whole experience is just as important as how your look is created. Overall, if they have many great reviews and a few bad ones, chances are the person who left the bad review didn’t communicate well with their artist and stylist and was left feeling less than happy about the entire process.

3. Schedule Your Makeup and Hair Trials in Advance

Most makeup artists and hair stylists charge separately for trials so don’t spend your entire wedding day beauty budget on multiple trials. Not only will it break the bank, it will leave you dazed and confused.

Choose your top 2 favorite artists and stylists that fit your style and schedule your appointments as soon as you can. Makeup and hair trials are done so you can work together with the artist and stylist to figure out what best fits your style and needs. Remember to keep an open mind because the look you may think you absolutely love, you may end up hating.

At your trial, if you feel a connection with your artist and stylist…seal the deal and move on. Time is ticking and being indecisive will only make things more complicated for you. The more trials you do, the more you will drain your bank account. The longer it takes you to decide on an artist and stylist, the higher the chance they will be booked by someone else. Come on ladies, don’t let this be an issue for you!

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up!

Be sure you tell your artist or stylist what you like and what you don’t like during your trial. Makeup and hair is not permanent, so if you don’t like something, just let us know! It’s an easy fix. If you tell your artist and stylist you like something that you really don’t like, they have no reason to believe otherwise.

Makeup artists and hair stylists are professionals and do not get offended easily. You won’t hurt our feelings if you tell us to put on more lashes or tone down the curls. We all want you to be thrilled with your look. When you leave your makeup and hair trial unhappy, it makes us unhappy as well. We can’t read your mind so make sure you SPEAK UP!

5. Be Realistic

You have imperfections. I have imperfections. We all have imperfections. Sometimes I find the most beauty in imperfections. There are ways to use makeup and hair to enhance or play up certain features but also be aware that there are a lot of things that we cannot fix. Make sure you discuss and clearly communicate any insecurities or concerns with your artist and stylist. At the same time, be realistic with your requests.

As we say in the industry, it’s a makeup brush and hair brush, not a magic wand. So if you have any insecurities, your artist and stylist can’t magically take that away. Embrace who you are, just the way you are!

6. Get a Solid Head Count Before You Book

Most makeup and hair stylists usually do more than one wedding in a day. So before you start making the process a lot harder for yourself, have your numbers confirmed before you book your services. I know, I know some bridesmaids can be difficult but getting a solid head count before booking isn’t as hard as you think. Most on location bridal beauty services require a minimum number of people in order for us to travel to your location, so have your numbers solidified before you are ready to book your contract. Nothing is worse than finding out half of your bridal party wants makeup and hair only to find out that your artist or stylist can’t fit them in because they have to be at another location to service another wedding party.

7. Get a Contract and Understand It

Just because a makeup artist and hair stylist has the wedding day open and available, don’t assume that you will be automatically booked with them for your day. Artists and stylists are like any other wedding vendor, so make sure to secure your spot with a signed contract and terms of services. A contract not only protects the artist and stylist you choose but it also protects you from any unforeseen circumstances.

Wedding contracts confirm that your artist and stylist will be at your wedding day and that you agree to the terms of services rendered. Keep in mind that wedding deposits are non-refundable so read your contract thoroughly and understand the terms before signing it. Don’t get angry if your vendor won’t refund the deposit because you changed your mind and decided to go elsewhere.

8. Be on Time and Be Courteous of Their Time

Be on time and be prepared to start when your artist and stylist arrive. Your artist and stylist are very aware of your wedding day timeline and will be respectful of your schedule. Show the same courtesy and be courteous of their time as well. When a makeup artist or hair stylist has to wait on someone, it makes it very stressful for the artist and stylist performing the services. Time is of the essence and they understand you have a timeline to follow, so make sure all the girls are ready to go in order to get your wedding party completed in time.

9. Consider Sanitation Practices

This is near and dear to my heart so please consider your artist and stylist’s sanitary practices when working with them. Do they spray their products and scrape their cream products? Do they sharpen their pencils before they use them on you? Serious makeup artists and hair stylists take sanitation very seriously and rightfully so. Ask your artist and stylist if they have sanitation practices in place for their team. An artist and stylist who is religious about sanitation will unquestionably share their sanitation practices without hesitation.

10. Trust Your Artist and Stylist

Don’t hold the reigns too tight and control your artist and stylist’s every move. You are paying them for their talent and expertise, so let them do their job. Don’t ask for 200 different opinions on how you look on the wedding day. Trust that they’ll work hard to make you look your best. After all, you’re representing them by showcasing your look on your big day.

What were your three favorite aspects from this wedding?

1) The bride walked down the aisle with her mom and brother. It was the sweetest thing! The setup couldn’t have been better. The ceremony took place in front of the Wrigley Square at Millenium Park. The bride had her heart set on this venue. Since the venue was not available the year she got engaged, the bride and groom decided to push the wedding back one year! They wanted every single detail to be exactly as they had envisioned it.

When I design a collection I strive to make a woman feel as special as the delicate creation she is wearing; take her to a enchanted time and place where women are princesses and magnificent goddesses. In today’s modern world we need to pause and indulge in beauty.

I spent my early childhood living in rural New York in a 19th century farmhouse on acres of rolling hills. As an only child, most of my time was consumed exploring the surrounding streams and forests, picking wild raspberries, and dreaming. Among the trees, ferns and wild flowers it was very easy to imagine and believe in a world of fairies and magic castles. Some of my earliest drawings are of princesses and brides dressed in elaborate gowns…

1920s inspiration

Reem is a very warm, sweet and talented person. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to interview her and to share it with U. We informed Reem that BeU Weddings is hosting The Great Gatsby Movie Premiere in Chicago (May 7th-invites out soon!) and how we are obsessed with everything Gatsby, the roaring 1920′s and this dress (above). Q. What was the vision of your day? How did you make this come alive?

Because my sister, Julia Lake, throws parties as her profession, I basically gave her free reign. The one thing that was important to me was that it felt intimate & represented me and my now husband, Ben. He’s from Vermont & I’m from Napa… The overall vibe was bohemian garden wedding. It had an easy breezy yet naturally beautiful vibe going on. We didn’t use a tent but I wanted to create a cozy vibe. Julia made ‘living rooms’ and lounge areas outdoors by putting rugs and pillows out on the lawn for people to get cozy & lounge on. She strung wired chandeliers from the tree tops so they’d hang down over us & even had an outdoor bed installed in the lavender garden. She handmade ribbon banners and hung them from the trees that wisped in the wind.

Q. What was your favorite aspect of the day?

We had one long continuous table that sat our 100 guests. Just sitting around that table surrounded by loved ones was great. And Ben & I got up and did an impromptu song together for everyone during dinner.

Q. What did you enjoy most about planning?

I’m a big foodie so the menu was really important to me. Picking the menu and doing the tastings was great. We served grilled quails from a family recipe.

Q. Did anything go wrong?

Not that I noticed but ask my sister… ha!

Q. What was your style for the day? Who did you wear?

I wore a vintage polkadot wedding dress from the 1940′s that I found at a roadside shop/shack in Bodega Bay. The lady said she had 1 dress that might work and it did. It cost me $40.

Q. Your sister is a planner. Did that come about from planning your wedding day? Can you tell us more about her company?

She’s a party planner and does all kinds of parties, not just weddings. She had always done it on the side but my wedding really put her over the top. A lot of people kept telling her it was crazy if she didn’t make this a full time thing, so she launched her own company, Julia Lake Parties! and it’s taken off ever since. I think people like her style because it’s not formulaic or cookie cutter perfect. She has a way of making each event playful, whimsical, and beautiful at the same time but it’s not predictable because she spends an enormous amount of effort catering to the individuals’ unique personalities and visions. I wouldn’t be doing my inspirational job justice if I did not bring you a musical playlist to crank up all night long.
